Seems there are a lot of people (Muslims especially) who have a hard time grasping the concept of the Trinity, which is Father, Son and Holy Spirit. They say, "How can three people be one person? That doesn't make any sense." Many flat out consider Christians to be polytheists for this reason.
God is One God, who has three natures. The Creator has given us many analogies to help us solve this apparent paradox. Time, for one, is one of my favorites. I'll attempt to describe clearly how Time, with it's three, distinct natures, is a wonderful reflection of it's Creator. |
|
Time is one, yet has three natures divided into Future, Present and Past.
The Future is the source of things to come. It is hoped for. It is the Soul of Time---it's Beginning. It is the "Is To Come". The Present is the manifestation of the Future; it's embodiment---or plainly, the Body. It is the spoken Word which executes the things which the Future tells it to execute, thereby making the Future Present. It is the answer to hope---for us especially. It is the Body of Time---the Now. It is the "Is". The Past is the Ghost of the Present---a living memory and template, readily available to any who will remember it. It is the Memory of the Present, forever sealed and unchangable---the final Ending Body (like a zipped zipper). It is the "Was". |
|
Now consider our Creator:
God has three natures: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit (or Holy Ghost). The Father is the source of things to come. He is the hoped for. He is the Soul of the Godhead---the Beginning. He is the "Is To Come". The Son is the manifestation of the Father; His embodiment---or plainly, His Body. He is the spoken Word, executing the things of His Father, thereby making the Father present. He is the answer to hope---for us especially. He is the Body of the Godhead---the Now. He is the "Is". The Holy Spirit is the Ghost of the Son---a living memory and template, readily available to any who will remember Him. He is the Ghost of the Godhead---the final Ending Body (like a zipped zipper). He is the "Was". God is therefore Three and yet One---as Time is three and yet one. So one can say with the assurance of truth that Jesus, the Son, is to His Father like the Present is to the Future. The Father, Son and Holy Ghost is indeed One. God is One God, and there is no other. |

"The four living creatures, each having six wings, were full of eyes around and within. And they do not rest day or night, saying:
"Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, Who was and is and is to come!" Revelation 4:8 "I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. I will give of the fountain of the water of life freely to him who thirsts." Revelation 21:6 |
|
Our natures are similar. Soul: the breath of life, our beginning; Body: embodiment of our Soul; Spirit: enbodiment of both our Body and Soul, as Jesus now is.
Consider the following: |
|
"Everything that is flesh is not the same flesh: there is human flesh, animals' flesh, the flesh of birds and the flesh of fish. Then there are heavenly bodies and there are earthly bodies; but the heavenly bodies have a beauty of their own and the earthly bodies a different one. The sun has its brightness, the moon a different brightness, and the stars a different brightness, and the stars differ from each other in brightness. It is the same with the resurrection of the dead: the thing that is sown is perishable but what is raised is imperishable; the thing that is sown is contemptible but what is raised is glorious; the thing that is sown is weak but what is raised is powerful; when it is sown it embodies the soul, when it is raised it embodies the spirit."
Paul, in 1st Corinthians. |
|
Soul, Body and Spirit: Three distinct facets of our nature, yet one. I think that when God says He created us in His Image, this is some of what He meant.
Therefore, the notion that there is no Son or Holy Spirit is like a man who recognizes only the Future and rejects the Present and the Past. Why? Because the Present fails to match his errant vision of what the Future should become. And if he rejects it's Present, he will most certainly reject the Present's Ghost, the Past, and deem it something not worth thinking about. He will be eternally blind, always looking for something that will never be. |
